Mulholland Drive: The Plot of the Story, How the Narrative Takes a Turn, Why Does Lynch use Strange Features in the Film? (Essay Sample) Content: Name:Instructor:Course:Date:Mulholland DriveThe movie Mulholland Drive is one of the movies that lets you in on a path on twisted narrative ,just when you think you have the plot figured out, it all changes. This movie is written and directed by David Lynch, and can be described as a neo-noir mystery film. The cryptic narrative features images and surreal scenes that do not make sense at first, but are ultimately in the end related to the story. Starring Naomi watts, Laura Harring and Justin Theroux, the story is about Betty Elms who comes to Los Angeles with a thirst for acting and making it as an actress. She gets to her aunts place and meets a woman suffering from a case of amnesia after an accident, and they become friends. The plot of the storyDespite instances of disruption to the main story by virtue of images and conversations the plot is easily grasped at first. Betty goes to stay at her aunts place and begin a friendship with Rita(a name she made up from a po ster in the room). To unravel her identity, Betty decides that they open Ritaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s purse, where they find a strange looking key and lots of money. In another scene, you see a man telling a companion about a strange dream he had right behind the diner called Winkies where they are seated. The man collapses right as he sees a figure as he explains the nightmare. This is a scene that literally distracts you; you get eager, wondering what it has to do with everything. There are several scenes with a director whose name is Adam; he faces mobsters who force him to cast an actor, which he is hesitant about. He goes home to a wife having an affair, and everything starts to fall apart when the wife kicks him out and he finds out he is broke.Another twisted scene that takes you on a psychological rollercoaster is that one of two men having a one on one, and laughing at one point. The next thing is the death of three individuals and one man leaving with a book.Back to Rita and Betty, Betty is adamant about helping her new friend, they go to Winkies the diner, and the waitress that serves them is called Diane. The name Diane strikes and Betty remembers a name Diane Selwyn. Betty goes to an audition where she does an outstanding performance and is praised for it, the casting agents take her to a movie set where she locks eyes with Adam the director. Adam does as he was told and declares the actress as the lead role by saying "This is the girlà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ .Betty and Rita go to Diane Selwynà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s home, break in and find a dead woman, they go back home and Rita disguises herself as a blonde. In the night Rita asks Betty to take her to Club Silencio, a strange theatre. There is a man claiming everything is an illusion "No Hay Banda" and there is singing. Suddenly there is a box in Bettyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s purse, they go home and Rita opens the box which falls down and the story takes a turn. How the Narrative Takes a TurnBetty is missing, a woman is looking for where the s ounds are coming from, the cowboy appears in the room where Diane lay telling her to wake up. Diane Selwyn awakes, the woman looks exactly like Betty. In this scene she is a failing actress who seems depressed; in love with Camilla Rhodes (Rita).Diane is invited by Camilla to a party on Mulholland Drive at Adams house. Adam and Camilla are portraying romance and Diane seems not pleased.Dianeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s story contradicts what the movie started like, here while at a dinner party she says she came to Hollywood after the aunt passed away and she met Camilla while auditioning for "The Sylvia North Storyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . Diane seems distraught as she watches another woman kiss Camilla. That scene ends as Adam begins to make an announcement and ends in laughter. At the end, Diane meets up with a killer at the diner Winkies, shows him a photo of Camilla and shows him a large amount of money. The waitress that serves them is called Betty. The assassin tells Diane that after completion of the job she will come across a blue key, she asks what it opens and the man laughs. The man with the nightmare suddenly walks in the diner and Diane sees him standing at the counter. She goes back to her apartment and finds a key in the house, on the table, hallucinations get the better of her, screaming and running to the bedroom she takes a gun and shoots herself."No Hay Bandaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ : There is no BandThis is said by a man at the strange underground theatre performing, with enthusiasm and intensity he goes to emphasize that everything is an illusion. In regards to the story one can only justify that this is a hint of relevance to Betty and Ritaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s story which takes a turn and roles and events are reversed.Mulholland Drive is not your...
